Marbella with it’s population of 126,000 is, without a doubt, La Costa del Sol's prime major tourist centres, thanks to the high quality of the facilities and services it provides. Clear proof of the high quality of its infrastructure is Puerto Banús, one of the most emblematic spots in Marbella. The historic part of town, sitting on a beautiful bay, shelters lovely corners of a typically Andalucian flavour, an ideal setting for sampling any one of the tasty recipes of the local cuisine. But Marbella is also a paradise for golf lovers. A dozen magnificent courses allow the golfer to play the sport before the unusual backdrop provided by the sea and the mountains. Being once a quiet fishing village, now it is a fabulous holiday destination for many people who are attracted by its sophisticated and the up-market image. Marbella has always been a favourite with the rich and famous and with each passing year becomes increasingly more so. There are also many restaurants and bars from which to appreciate how beautiful the city has become.
Puerto Banús was founded by José Banus back in the '70s and since then has grown from a small fishing port into a fashionable marina often frequented by the rich and famous. Surrounded by exclusive housing developments, Puerto Banús each year welcomes some of the biggest and most luxurious yachts in the world. Its facilities also offer a select leisure area made up of restaurants, business premises and shops selling the big international designer labels and luxury items. Situated just a few kilometres west of Marbella before San Pedro de Alcántara, it has a fantastic mountain backdrop as well of course as beautiful sea views and its location makes it an ideal holiday destination, for those that can afford it, or a great place to spend a day window shopping and people watching, for those who can't.
In addition there is a large commercial centre, a Corte Ingles department store, a marine observatory and a multi-screen cinema showing films in both Spanish and English. If you visit Puerto Banús at nightime then you will be able to enjoy some of the best nightlife to be found on La Costa del Sol. There are plenty of alfresco bars, piano clubs, casinos and discos to choose from and the partying goes on until the early hours of the morning.
